Russell and Evelyn Bannwart established Clay Hill Ranch in 1956.  They and their two daughters, LaCinda and Dawn, raised horses, cattle, sheep, deer, and chickens.  While Russell was the director of the Washington Park Zoo in nearby Michigan City, Indiana, the farm was also the temporary home to a wide variety of animals including exotic birds, elk, lion and tiger cubs, and an orphaned baboon.

Today the farm is owned by the Bannwart's eldest daughter LaCinda and her husband Robert.  They are joined by the family of their youngest daughter, Heather.  Brett and Heather Kessler live in the original farmhouse.  Their sons Blake, Brady, and Brock are the fifth generation of the family to live and work at the farm.

Clay Hill Ranch has been raising and showing North Country Cheviots since 1983, and have shown at the Indiana State Fair since 1985.  Today, Blake, 14, and Brady, 11, and Brock, 7, are continuing the tradition.  They are also adding their own interests to the farm.  Dorsets, Katahdins, and dairy cattle have been added, as well as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and rabbits.
